The Franciscan Sisters of the
Atonement operate the C.A.P. Head Start and Lurana Shelter programs. Our volunteers greatly enrich the programs and enhance the ability of the organization to achieve its mission.
Regularly-scheduled volunteers are generally asked to complete a two or three hour shift at the same time and on the same day each week. Alternate arrangements may be negotiated by contacting the Coordinator of Volunteer Resources. A minimum commitment of four months of service is desirable. Special Events volunteers are asked to complete shifts on an as-needed basis several times per year.

C.A.P. Head Start
C.A.P. Head Start is an early intervention and education program for children ages 3 ½ to 5 ½ from low-income families in the inner city. C.A.P. Head Start requires volunteers for the following positions:
Classroom Assistant
As Classroom Assistants, volunteers will assist teachers with lesson planning and related classroom activities such as storytelling, reading and literacy activities, educational computer games, arts and crafts activities, outdoor activities, serving snacks and lunches, singing and music activities, and field trips. Shifts are available Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Child Support
Child Support volunteers will actively supervise children of all ages during Parent Gatherings and lead them in planned activities such as arts and crafts, story-time, board and computer games, indoor and outdoor play experiences, and movie-watching. This position is available during Parent Gatherings, which are held on Thursday evenings from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Field Trip Assistants
As Field Trip Assistants,
volunteers assist with monthly Tuesday outings,
which may include swimming, trips to the zoo, the
museum, Let's Play or a farm. Volunteers help
teachers supervise the students. This position
is available one Tuesday of every month.
Special Projects
Special Projects Volunteers
assist in various projects which may include sewing,
knitting, crafts, repair work, painting, gift
wrapping and classroom prep work. Volunteers
for these positions are on call; it' s a casual
position in which the volunteer comes in if he/she
is available on a specific day.
Translator of Written Material
This position is suitable for volunteers fluent in both English and
either Chinese, French, Vietnamese, Spanish, or Arabic. Responsibilities include translating English policy manuals and/or permission slips into one of the aforementioned languages, so that Head Start parents can communicate more effectively with staff. This position is done off-site (in your home) and on your own time schedule.
Lurana Shelter
Lurana Shelter provides protective emergency accommodation to women and children escaping domestic violence and abuse. Volunteer positions available through Lurana Shelter are varied and include:

Administrative Volunteer
Volunteers in this position will assist the Administrative team in performing various office duties within Lurana Shelter, such as photocopying, entering computer data, sorting and organizing in many areas, and taking inventory of supplies. Morning, afternoon, and early evening shifts are available.
Receptionist
The Receptionist is
responsible for permitting or denying access to the Shelter by answering the high-security doors and controlling the electronic gate, and remaining constantly vigilant in the surveillance of Shelter entrances and grounds. As well, the Receptionist assists the family support workers in the main office area by answering the business telephone lines, and handing out medication and bus tickets to residents. Shifts are available Mondays through Sundays, between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Interpreter
This position is suitable for
volunteers fluent in both English, and either
Chinese, French, Vietnamese, Spanish or less common
languages. The Interpreter assists the Lurana
Shelter team in understanding the ESL client's needs
and provides Shelter information to her. This
is an "on call" position. Interpreters are
assigned to assist a woman for the duration of her
stay (maximum 21 days).
Beauty Consultant
Beauty Consultant volunteers provide hair and/or aesthetic services to the residents staying at Lurana Shelter. To qualify for this position, the volunteer must be a certified hairdresser or aesthetician. All Beauty Consultant volunteers will be asked set up for their activities, clean up afterwards, and provide their own supplies, tools, and equipment.
Cook's Assistant
The Cook's Assistant is
responsible for helping the Cook with lunch or
supper preparations at Lurana Shelter. Typical
duties include baking cookies and cakes, preparing
salads, cleaning up and restocking shelves.
Two to three hour shifts are available Monday
through Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm.
Candlelight Dinner
Host
This volunteer greets the
women and children for the special Wednesday night
dinner that takes place weekly at Lurana Shelter.
The Candlelight Dinner host assists with setting up,
serving dinner and cleaning up after dinner.
Shifts for this position are available Wednesday
nights from 4:30 to 7:30 pm.
Household Volunteer
The Household volunteer
provides assistance with household tasks at Lurana
Shelter. The volunteer will launder clothing
donations and in-house bed linens. Evening, weekend,
and daytime shifts available
Karaoke Night Host
The Karaoke Night Host hosts
a karaoke event, a night of fun and music.
Duties include setting up and putting way the
karaoke equipment. This position requires an
enthusiastic and energetic individual. Shifts are
available once per week for approximately 1 1/2 to 2
hours
Pet Visitation Volunteer
The Pet Visitation volunteer
and companion animal will visit, spend time with,
and interact with the women and children staying at
Lurana Shelter. The companion animal must be in good
health and possess up-to-date immunizations. The
companion animal must also be able to remain calm
and relaxed when interacting with small children.
To qualify for this position, both the volunteer and the companion animal must have completed the "PAWS For a Visit: An Introduction to Pet Therapy" course offered through the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta.
Babysitter
This position involves
babysitting the children in one family, who are
staying at the Shelter, while their mother is at
necessary appointments. Babysitters interact
with and entertain the children with a variety of
activities. This is a casual position, Mondays
to Sundays, a minimum of 1 hour to a maximum of 5
hours, depending on need.
Child Support
Child Support duties at Lurana
Shelter may involve working directly with the children or assisting the staff in a variety of indirect capacities. There are a variety of different volunteer positions to choose from. They include:
A) Support roles
- Child support administrative
volunteer - Assists with photocopying, collating, inventory, computer work, data entry, and filing. Shifts are available Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Child support maintenance volunteer - Rakes and weeds sandbox, sorts and organizes sporting equipment and toys in the toy garage, disinfects toys and discards broken toys in the playroom.
- Craft prep volunteer - Assists with getting craft projects ready.
- Snack volunteer - Prepare a morning and afternoon snack for the children staying at Lurana Shelter. Shifts available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
B) Roles working directly with children
- Play buddy - Spend time with a child at Lurana Shelter for the duration of the time the child is in the Shelter. In this position, the volunteer will be required to commit to three visits per week for the entire time the family he or she is working with will be staying at the Shelter (a maximum of three weeks). As there are not always families with young children staying at the Shelter, the volunteer will need to be available to come into the Shelter on an on-call basis. Potential activities include coloring, blocks, stories, music, board games, and playing in the sandbox.
- Teddy bear picnic volunteer - Children come down in their nightclothes and the volunteer sings to them and shares stories with them. Shifts are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Mealtime activity volunteer - Assists with quiet activities to keep children occupied while their mother finishes her meal. Potential activities include storytelling, board games, puzzles, songs, and crafts. Shifts are available Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as well as from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with the exception of Wednesdays, where a late afternoon shift is available from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Field trip volunteer - Accompanies children and staff on field trips and helps ensure children remain safe. First Aid/CPR would be an asset, but are not required.
- Family day volunteer - Assists with family-oriented activities on the Monday of long weekends. Activities will include leading children's games, crafts, setting up for and preparing a "special family meal." The volunteer must be available to come into the Shelter for an eight-hour shift on the Monday of long weekends. Volunteers will be asked to contact the Shelter prior to the long weekend to confirm the start time for their shift.
Special Events
Special Events volunteers provide assistance with fundraising events, as well as help work display booths and hand out material about
our programs at community-related events
and functions. Some events that require
volunteer assistance include: Avenue of
Hope Playhouse Parade in May, the
Avenue of Hope Gala Dinner in April, the Tiara Classic and Silent Auction, the Edmonton Woman's Show in the Fall and Spring, and the C.A.P. Head Start Christmas Party in December. Volunteers are asked to commit to events in which they interested and available.
